ABOUT DR. PATRICK LAP SUN CHU

Patrick was born and grown up in Hong Kong. He studied medicine at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). He had specialist training in psychiatry and worked in various sub-specialties in public hospitals for about 20 years. Developing a special interest in psychotherapy, he pursued further studies and training in different modalities, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, psychoanalytic group therapy, and hypnotherapy. He served as the Educational Supervisor of Psychotherapy for the Hospital Authority from 2008 to 2010.

Patrick has been working as a private psychiatrist since 2010. In addition to medication management, he continues to practice psychotherapy. He is a Somatic Experiencing Practitioner (SEP) for trauma and body psychotherapy, and a Jungian Analyst (International Association of Analytical Psychology, IAAP) for depth psychology.

On his personal journey, Patrick first turned to meditation to address his own spiritual and anxiety concerns. He has studied Transcendental Meditation, Vipassana, and Mindfulness. He also maintains a regular yoga practice. In his late 30s, he experienced a midlife crisis, which led him to undertake several years of personal Jungian analysis during his training. This experience of being both a patient and a therapist has been invaluable. Patrick has passed through the “night sea journey” and emerged as a ‘wounded healer’.

Therapy Approaches

Patrick is interested in anxiety and panic disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, mind-body problems, adjustment and stress-related disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), psychological and childhood developmental trauma, complex trauma, burnout, and midlife crisis.

His therapeutic approach is integrative and holistic, addressing the body, mind, and spirit. He is flexible and eclectic, utilising a blend of cognitive, behavioural, emotional, and psychodynamic approaches according to the client’s needs. Dream analysis is an important element of his work. Somatic Experiencing is used in trauma therapy, while Jungian analysis is a long-term therapy suitable for midlife crisis and the spiritual quest for meaning of life.

Therapy sessions are typically 50 minutes long and held weekly. The duration of therapy depends on individual needs, ranging from short-term (3 to 6 months), medium-term (6 to 12 months), to long-term (over 1 year).

The primary aim of therapy is the reduction of symptoms and relief from suffering. The overarching goals are healing, self-realisation, growth, and transformation. The long-term goal of Jungian analysis is individuation and wholeness.
